Everyday is filled with choices. I chose to this outfit, a comfy sweater with some warm boots. Nothing new or fancy, just comfy casual.
There are many choices that we make without even realizing it. Some are as natural as blinking or breathing. Some are more difficult or require more concentration.
Are we concentrating on staying in communication with our Heavenly Father? Do we consult Him on some of those more difficult or concerning choices?
When we were looking for a new house, we began to pray that we would know the minute we stepped on the property. We didn't want to have to go back home and pray about it. We tried to stay in constant communion with The Lord, so when that choice-point came, we would know exactly what to do.
Psalms 32:8 (NIV)
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.
Not saying that there aren't times that you need to stop, wait and pray about something. There are times for that.
There are also times we need to be praying for our future, but we can't become so consumed with the future that we neglect the choices we need to make each day.
Like yesterday... I came home from errands and there was someone parked in our driveway and an older gentleman was ringing my doorbell....
I walked up to him and asked if I could help him. He had stopped by to see if the previous owner was still there and if they were alright. (Wasn't that sweet?) Anyway, I explained that the husband had passed and the wife moved closer to her children. After saying goodbye, he got in his car and I went inside.
Well, a few minutes later he didn't leave... hmmm. So, I went outside to see if he needed any help. His car wouldn't start. 😕 Ugh...bummer. He started telling me all about the trouble he's had with his car.
Hubby was on his way home from an appointment. When he got home, I introduced him to John. They began trying to figure things out. Well, the car wasn't going to start. John didn't have a cell phone, but he knew a mechanic to come help.
Hubby called for him and helped him push his car out on to the street to wait for help. John didn't want to come in and declined any water or food. After a bit, I sent hubby out with a bottle of water and a snack. They got to chatting for quite awhile, and finally coaxed him to come into the house. It was kinda cold out.
Well, John doesn't have any family in the area. My heart was going out to him. We chatted for quite sometime until help arrived. Hubby gave him our number, just incase he would ever need anything.
You see, we made a lot of choices yesterday. We have a ton 'to do' here at the house... we could have just kind of left him out there while we got busy doing our things. This all took up quite a bit of our day, but The Lord wanted us to be there for John.
I also always think about this verse too...
Hebrews 13:1-2(NLT)
Keep on loving each other as brothers and sisters. 2 Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it!
You never know....
I believe The Lord is a redeemer of time. He knows what we need to do, but He also knew that John was going to need our help.
John also taught us a lesson... that in this busy world we need to stop and check in on people. John had stopped by even though he hadn't seen or heard from the previous owners in years, but he felt the need to stop by. We need to check in on people. We need to ask and see how people are doing, especially the elderly. Let's not get too busy in our own little worlds, that we forget about people.
People are the only thing we can take to heaven with us. Let's stop and make some real important choices.
Blessings,
