Sunday Style Over 50 - What Is Your Anchor?

Hi Friends! What a beautiful day!  Although, it sure was humid!  You wouldn't know it, by the photo, but I actually took quite a bit of time curling my hair... It all disappeared in a matter of minutes as soon as I stepped outside. 😆

Oh, well... we'll be riding the motorcycle to church, so I'll just have to figure something out....👍  

Today I want to ask you, what is your anchor? 

Hebrews 6:19 (NLT)

This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary

When I read this verse, I began to think about and ask myself, what is my anchor?  

The verse says 'This hope'. It's the hope of being with Jesus in heaven forever.  Jesus is that anchor.

But I think we can substitute other things for our anchor.  Some may put a spouse as an anchor, or a job, or finances, really you can fill in the blank with anything that you allow to 'hold' you. But those substitutes were never meant to be anchors.  They won't be able to do the job of an anchor.

An anchor holds a ship in place, it keeps it from drifting off too far.  As a ship begins to wander and float away, the rope connected to the anchor is pulled taut and the ship is tugged back to center.  

If we allow a substitute to be our anchor, at some point, we will drift away with nothing to hold us center, because they aren't capable of being that perfect anchor.

An anchor is supposed to keeps us steady when the waves and the winds start to blow. Without Jesus as our anchor, we will get tossed about by the storms of life.  

1 John 2:28 (NLT)

And now, dear children, remain in fellowship with Christ so that when he returns, you will be full of courage and not shrink back from him in shame. 

With Jesus as our anchor, when we begin to drift and wander, the Holy Spirit is like that rope of hope tied to the anchor.  When it pulls taut, the Holy Spirit gently reminds us that we are drifting too far and that we need to come center.  We sense that tug in our soul.  My grandma used to call it, 'a check in her heart'.  It was a feeling that something wasn't right, and that she needed to stop and listen to what The Lord was telling her.

Isaiah 26:3 (NLT)

You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!

  

As we grow in The Lord, we actually want to stay centered more.  We don't want to wander off, so we draw that rope in,  making it shorter and shorter.  We stop drifting away so often, and we feel the strength from staying connected to our anchor.

Psalm 32:24 (NLT) 

So be strong and courageous, all you who put your hope in the Lord! 

Jesus wants to keep you safe and secure.  He wants close communication with you.  He is our hope.

My hope in Jesus is the anchor of my soul.

Lamentations 3:21-26 (NLT) 

Yet I still dare to hope when I remember this: The faithful love of the Lord never ends!  His mercies never cease.  Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning.  I say to myself, “The Lord is my inheritance; therefore, I will hope in him!”  The Lord is good to those who depend on him, to those who search for him.  So it is good to wait quietly for salvation from the Lord.
