This Red Cabbage Slaw is delicious!!
Hubby and I are originally from the west coast. We both grew up in Southern California, that's where we met and got married.
We used to go to a restaurant in Covina, CA called Clearman's Northwoods Inn. They have incredible food! Their cheese bread is amazing. The potatoes are massive and could be a meal all by itself.
With every dinner they serve a bowl of red cabbage and a bowl of regular salad that is drenched in a buttermilk ranch. We loved to mix the two together!

Red Cabbage Slaw
Clearman's Copycat Recipe
1 head of red cabbage
½ c. vegetable oil
½ c. red wine vinegar
3 Tbl. sugar
4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. season salt
½ tsp. onion powder
¼ tsp. pepper
¼ tsp. cayenne pepper
Cut cabbage into thin slices and place in a large bowl, that has a tight lid.
Mix the rest of the ingredients into a measuring cup. Stir to dissolve.
Pour over cabbage.
The first day it's good. The second and third it gets better, by the fourth day it's at its best!
You really don't need any other dressing... But a bit of ranch on it is so yummy!
Northwood's Inn was my favorite restaurant when I lived in Covina in the 70's! My mouth was watering as I read your description of the salads, potatoes, cheese bread...absolutely the best! I can't wait to try the Red Cabbage Salad recipe.

DeleteI have used the same recipe for years with the exceptions of: 1. toss out the chunky white pieces of red cabbage while slicing 2.put everything except the oil in a plastic bag that you can seal, remove as much air from the bag as possible and squish and turn the bag several times a day while it is in the fridge. 3. don't add the oil until the 4th day because it will block the other ingredients from entering the cabbage.

DeleteI grew up in Covina until I was 12. Northwoods Inn was the place we always went for big family get togethers. Love this and I'm making it tonight!

I am going to try your recipe. It sounds delicious. I just got back from having lunch at Northwoods Inn in Covina. Also one of my old stomping grounds. Our parents would take us there for our birthdays. To this day I celebrate birthdays, anniversaries at Northwoods. Thanks for the recipe!

DeleteThis is a favorite at work potlucks. I grew up in Glendora and Northwoods was our celebration restaurant as well. I do not add the regular salt. Too salty. Otherwise, yum!
