DIY Garden Planter Boxes

These DIY Garden Planter Boxes are awesome!  We built them over 8 years ago and they are still going strong as you can see in this photo.

Yes, they were an investment, but well worth it!  We used Trex decking material for them.  This post is going to show you what we did, not an actual tutorial because everyone's needs are different.

Hubby and I wanted to have a couple of raised planter boxes to have a small garden, mostly to grow veggies for some salsa.  We LOVE salsa! 😍

When we considered building these planters, we really wanted them to hold up and not have any maintenance.  We invested in composite wood for several reasons... no staining, warping, rotting, just to mention a few.  Hubby likes to remind me that time is $$.  He would rather invest in something that lasts instead of rebuilding them when they rot, plus staining them over and over.

I have to tell you, he was right! We have no complaints about these planters!

We decided to place the planters in front of the shed, one on each end.  This area has transformed so much.

Hubby made up some plans and we went to work!  He showed me how to use the circular saw.  This was my first time! A little nervous, but I got the hang of it!

Next, we started putting all of the pieces together.  This composite wood is heavy!  There is no way I could have done this by myself!

We build them in 2 layers.  We set out the frame and used these corner supports to screw them all together.  I've had several people ask what those corner supports were.  I've tried to find them again, but we purchased them on clearance and haven't seen them since.  

Another alternative would to use a 2x2 or a 2x4 on the inside corner to attache the frame pieces to.

Then we stacked another layer right on top of the first one.

As you can see we also added a center support.  This will keep the planter square after dirt is added.

We added a top ledge.  That way we can actually sit on the planter and lay tools or whatever on it while we are working out there.  Hubby chose to miter the corners.

We carried the garden planters out to the shed and then attached the top ledge.  They were heavy enough!!

It all looks so different today!  We've been growing veggies every year since!
