Painted Window Boxes

I actually have two painted window boxes to share with you.

One is a simple tape and paint method and the other is a faux galvanized metal look.   I did this paint and tape method awhile back, and I actually don't even have these plastic planters anymore.  Over time they get brittle and break.

Here is the paint and tape method.  It came out pretty good!

Here I did a black and white mock up, that I thought would look more modern for today...

The paint and tape method is so easy!  Simply tape off the area you don't want painted then spray paint and take off the tape right away.  Some plastic window boxes have a removable bottom, which makes it easier to add another color block.

The second method I'm going to show you is a faux galvanized metal look.  I was surprised at how easy this was!

It's basically the same kind of plastic window box.  Mine was pretty dirty, so I cleaned it up first.

Next, I spray painted the whole thing with my favorite spray paint... Rust-Oleum 2X Ultra Cover in Stone Gray.  I used that same brand of paint for the color block method, it's just the best.

After the paint dried, I then spray painted the entire thing with Rust-Oleum Hammered Finish paint.  That really gave the surface texture and depth.

If you look closely, you can see black specs.  I used the Rust-Oleum 2X Ultra Cover Primer in black to achieve that look.  Basically, you spray the planter at a distance, at least a 12-18".  Just in light bursts.

This next part is where the magic happens!  I still can't believe it worked.  I was pretty skeptical, but I figured, I had nothing to lose.

All I did was, spray the same Rust-Oleum 2X in Stone Gray paint onto a paper towel and swipe here and there.  I did it in different directions.  After that, instead of swiping, I dabbed the paint on here and there.  Seriously... that's it!

Look at that texture!!

I really like the way it came out!
