Life at the Stonybrook House has truly been a little nutty.
These lovely magazine holders did not come out as planned, they took me on quite an adventure!
These lovely magazine holders did not come out as planned, they took me on quite an adventure!
I wanted to do a cute little post, but it
turned into a mess.
Why is it that when you start something thinking this is
going to be quick and easy and then it turns into a project that takes twice as
long and becomes twice at hard.
Is there
a life lesson there???
Anyway…. I have to admit I am a bit of a messy. When you come to my house it looks pretty
clean and tidy most of the time.
But…. Lurking behind closed doors or drawers or BASEMENTS….
But…. Lurking behind closed doors or drawers or BASEMENTS….
It’s
another story. I’m a piler, a stuffer
and a dumper….
So, I’m trying to stay focused on the office, right? I thought, “I know, I’ll work on my magazine piles” I literally took pictures of all of the places I had piles of magazines.
So, I’m trying to stay focused on the office, right? I thought, “I know, I’ll work on my magazine piles” I literally took pictures of all of the places I had piles of magazines.
How about 8 piles? Really?
So, I dumped them all in the family room and started organizing.
Say "Hi" to my kitty Arwen.
I had these lovely little magazine holders I bought a couple
of years ago at
IKEA (one my favorite places) I have a couple of orange ones and white ones.
Cute, I’ll just make them cuter by adding
some stripes to them.
This is going to
be easy! I put the painter’s tape on them and painted the white stripe.
What in the world happened?
Are you kidding me? It started to
take off the orange then just kept tearing EVERYTHING off…. UGH!
Its painter’s tape, this isn’t supposed to
happen! This is NOT working, so I got a
bit frustrated and took it out on those poor magazine holders! I started ripping off all of the tape. I ruined them.
What in the world am I going to do now?
So much for a cute little post… Ha!
I must redeem these poor magazine holders!
The next day I was off shopping. What can I find? I went to Hob Lob, Target, Jo-Ann’s. I’m hunting for anything to cover these
with. Nothing, I couldn’t find anything
I liked.
How close do you think I was to
just pitch them? Well, very close….
I am
so irritated with these things that I don’t want to even spend a dime on
them.
To me they don’t DESERVE a dime to
be spent on them. What can I do? Lord, help me! What do I have in the “basement” that I could
use? Sheets! I have sheets AND I have an adorable Martha
stencil AND I have paints! Yes!
I got to work that night!
I got to work that night!
I have to tell you, it took wwwaaayyy longer than I had
planned.
But I think they came out pretty cute.
I have a few more to make to complete the collection.

All of this
for a few magazine holders? Really? Oh
well, they were practically free!
I LOVE the magazine holders! So awesome!!! I would love for you to link up at my party going on now!

Thanks, Jen! It's funny how things just happen and fall into place!
DeleteWhat a great result though! I love the choice of colour.
ReplyDeleteThanks a bunch! I am in LOVE with the color orange! I must have it in my life!
DeleteOk, I have to tell you Lori that all of my projects start off with dreams of grandeur but often lead me on a wild rampage of things flying around, getting ripped apart and re-done. I am starting to feel like the process is just as important as the end project itself. I just try to embrace it and think about how much I have learned. I have some orange boxes from Ikea similar to what you have and you just gave me some great ideas on what not to do and what to do. If you want to get a good laugh come visit my blog and read about my Lucky I Lived Laundry Room Reveal! Thanks for a great post! Lesley
ReplyDeleteHi Leslie! Thank you sooo much for your encouragement!
DeleteI love the laughs as much as the projects!! You did a great job, and they turned out beautifully. I think I like the ned result better than the idea of stripes. I feel your pain too, I've made MANY messes of things in my time crafting. Ahh, such is life. We learn and keep pushing, right? and sometimes you end up with something you like even more.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
Lynn
thanks so much for the comment and the encouragement! I'm sooo new at this, and it sometimes is a hit or miss. Maybe more misses.... :)
DeleteI thought I only had those kind of "failures"!!! I love those stencils. The magazine holders look really cute. Nice job.
ReplyDeleteHi Mary! At least this one turned out!
DeleteReally lovely!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the sweet comment!
DeleteThese are so cute! I love the color and the pattern you used! I dressed up a few plain magazine holders with some scrapbook paper and mod podge a few years ago.
ReplyDeleteThanks sooo much for the kind words! I had to do something with those disasters...
DeleteGlad to see I am not the only one whose projects often take a left turn into "this is not at all what I had planned!" Love the final result.
ReplyDeleteThanks sooo much! And I thought it was going to be a disaster.... I love it too!
DeleteI think your final project is even cuter than what the original might have been. I feel bad for you and the hassle though. I would have probably just pitched them.:)
ReplyDeleteThanks!! I was tempted to pitch them.... I just have such a hard time doing that! I'm just glad they worked out!! :)
DeleteWow these came out great! Love the colors :) Visiting from Addicted to Decorating. Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jessica! Isn't funny how everyone loves flub-ups... ;)
DeleteSo glad you stopped by!
Love them! they turned out Fantastic!

Thanks, Cristina! I sooo appreciate the encouragement! I'm going to check out your blog!
DeleteThese turned out really cute - I think we all have projects that turn into lemons - the trick is to make that "mess up" into lemonaide! I think you did that.
ReplyDeleteI hopped over from A2D - would love it if you hopped over and checked me out!
Hugs -
Carol @ arewethereyet
Thanks, Carol!! I am loving the lemonade! Definitely will check out your blog!!
DeleteThese are PERFECT! I'm featuring you tomorrow! Xo, Aimee
ReplyDeleteYay! Thanks, Aimee!!
DeleteThe magazine holders look great - however, where are you going to put the rest of your magazines????? I ask this because I have as many or more stacks than you do, and 10 or 12 magazine holders already full of magazines. It's really a little sad. I have a stack 20 inches high of magazines I have not had time to read since I started blogging.... I think I just need to have someone come in and throw them away for me. I'm a new follower - would love for you to follow back.
ReplyDeleteI'll be honest, there are still some stacks. That disaster took way too long and I haven't gotten around to finishing the others. I definitely need more!
ReplyDeleteLooks like your persistence paid of. They look custom designed. Eh, they are customed designed.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mimi! Now I just need to finish the rest....
ReplyDeleteThese are so cute... definitely worth all of the trouble :) I really love those stencils too!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Rachel! Now I just need to finish the rest. Isn't that Martha pack of stencils awesome???
DeleteLove this! I've been there too. Sometimes the things that we end up loving the most are the things that caused the most frustration because of all of the effort we spent making it just right. =)
ReplyDeleteThanks, so much Arica! You are sooo right! I never thought they would have been such a hit!
ReplyDeleteLove these very cute idea. I love IKEA too. I am going to reveal a closet makeover soon with things from Ikea!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Amy! I'll have to check out the closet makeover!!
DeleteThe look awesome! Well worth the extra time!

DeleteThe magazine holders look amazing! And, I loved your story. Haha. I've had my share of DIY disasters, too, and in the moment, it's nearly impossible to laugh about it. You should feel great about how these turned out!
ReplyDeleteYou are too kind! Thank you, Ann.
DeleteI love the new look - even if it was quite an adventure to get them that way. Thanks for linking up to Terrific Tuesdays.

Hahaha! Thanks! It was my pleasure to share! I'm sure I'll definitely be back!
DeleteNice save! Sometimes I give up on my disasters....sometimes not! Glad you didn't on this one!
ReplyDeleteWhat can I say that everyone before me didn't. I love it, and very creative. Love the color also. Disasters happen for a reason. Thanks for sharing your creative inspiration at Sunday's Best Par.tay!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Cathy! Love your new blog look! My pleasure to share!!
Deletehaha...I have magazine piles too BUT stopped with the subscriptions till I could get a handle on things...it's been almost a year and I'm almost magazine free, weeeee! :) Great little boxes, love the cloth look, even if it wasn't what you had in mind when you first started out!

DeleteI have had projects like these all too often! They turned out just perfect in the end! Thanks for joining us this week!
ReplyDeleteTake care,
Trish
Thank you so much! It's funny how the things you think are ruined turn out better than you thought!
DeleteI have a couple of these from Target.. and have had lots of DIY Disasters.. so you are not alone.. LoL! :)
ReplyDeleteTHanks for linking up at create & inspire. :)
Angie
Thanks, Angie! It's funny how things turn out!
DeleteI'm sure that it was very frustrating. Failed craft projects always are. Next time, try to Mod Podge some scrapbooking paper if the tape doesn't work. They turned out pretty good though.
ReplyDeleteDon't you know it! The scrapbooking paper is a good idea too! Thanks! Glad you stopped by!
DeleteThey are so cute! I love them and I also love the fact that you showed how much of a challenge it was, lol. That's the life of a real crafter ;)
ReplyDeleteVisiting from Sugar Bee Crafts
Hi Kristin! Just trying to keep it real! Thanks for stopping by!!
DeleteThanks for linking to Take-A-Look Tuesday - - you were featured today!!
ReplyDelete--Mandy, www.SugarBeeCrafts.com
Thanks, Mandy!! I'll check it out!
DeleteI made something similar years ago but I used cereal boxes and soap boxes. I covered them with contact paper I found at the thrift store so they were nearly free. I have quit subscribing to magazines, now just trying to get ahead of what I already have. I just found your site and love it. Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteNearly free is good enough for me!! Thanks for reading! I want to drop some of my magazines, but I HAVE to have my Better Homes... :)
DeleteThis comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
ReplyDeleteSuper cute... if you ever want to go the striped route again, they make really awesome colored duck tape( sold at craft stores) ,so you could measure out the placement and pot the tape on it and never have to paint at all! hope this is helpful for future projects!:)
ReplyDeleteGreat idea!! Thanks!
DeleteThanks for the inspiration, the craft project as well as the perseverance! Just wondering, did you cover the inside of the boxes too, and if not, how did you finish off the inside edges? I'd love to give this a try with some (super ugly!) magazine holders I nabbed at a thrift store.
ReplyDeleteHi Jenny! No I didn't cover the inside of the boxes. I figured they'd be facing the wall and filled with magazines anyway!
DeleteThanks for stopping by!! :D
